Eucharist: The Body of Christ by Fr. Paul McPartlan

This 63 page pocket size booklet treats the profound mystery of the Holy Eucharist in surprising detail but in an accessible manner. The author accentuates the importance of the Eucharist to the Church both as the instrument of communion with God and the sign of unity among His people. He traces the origins of the Eucharist in Sacred Scripture. A difference of emphasis is identified between the patristic and scholastic periods in the Church, with the Fathers proceeding from Christ through the Eucharist to the Church, while the second millennium was marked, in the face of much contestation, by efforts at affirming Christ's real presence in the Eucharist. The author insists on the necessary intertwining of the sacramental and sacrificial aspects of the Eucharist and concludes that understood in this way the Body and Blood of Christ becomes the means by which the lives of the faithful can be truly transformed. The booklet contains a helpful list of further reading on the subject.

This text may be a useful aid in spiritual preparation for the 2012 International Eucharistic Congress which has as its theme 'Communion with Christ and with One Another'.
